Welcome ....

“Tap into the power of extraordinary ordinary women”

Often as a new President takes office, it is customary for her to speak of the Board goals and where her leadership will be directed. Enough time for that in due course. I would like to focus at this time on PERSONAL LEADERSHIP, and how an ordinary woman can make an extraordinary impact by using her personal leadership.

The Junior League of Toronto, and indeed the Junior League movement, is full of “extraordinary ordinary” women. For most of us, a Google search will not turn up our name or our deeds, but we all have the potential to have an impact far beyond our obvious capabilities. The following are just a few examples where stretching ourselves will make all the difference.

An extraordinary ordinary Leaguer thinks outside the box. When she hears of “healthy living” as our community focus area, she thinks not just of childhood obesity, but also of mental health and addiction and what a project might look like in those “not so popular” causes.

       Elisa McFarlane
           JLT PRESIDENT
2007/08

She challenges the norm.

A Junior Leaguer with Personal Leadership understands that if she honours her commitment as a member, the League can honour its promise to develop her potential.

An extraordinary ordinary Leaguer has acute vision and a highly developed sense of smell - she can spot a community need and connect it with a League competency in every interaction with the people around her.

The extraordinary ordinary Leaguer knows it’s not about her, but about the communities she serves. Her personal leadership helps her to focus each day, on the League work that has the greatest impact on advancing the mission. She understands mathematics innately - teamwork generates more than the sum of the individual team members.

The extraordinary ordinary Leaguer relishes the challenges and opportunities of living in a city of more than 160 different cultures. Beyond the obvious dining advantages, she ponders how the League can be relevant to all women who share our mission.

The extraordinary ordinary Leaguer sees a fellow Leaguer in need and creates a circle of support around her - whether to help her get her League job done, or to help her cope with a personal issue.

Imagine the impact on the community if every member of the Junior League of Toronto used their personal leadership to advance the mission. Imagine the impact on the membership if each extraordinary ordinary member reached out to just one other member and connected with them.

Most sincerely,

Elisa McFarlane
President
